The Benefits of Getting Regular Trims
Most people wait too long between cuts. Here is what actually happens to hair when you do, and why regular trims work in your favour.
Trims Split Ends Hair Health

Regular trims are one of the simplest and most overlooked parts of a hair care routine. Not because they make hair grow faster, but because they remove the damage that slows everything else down.

A trim removes split ends and damaged lengths before they travel further up the hair shaft. What is left behind is stronger, healthier hair that responds better to styling, holds colour longer and looks fuller from root to tip.

Trim versus haircut: what is the difference?

A trim removes a small amount of length, typically around an inch or two, without changing the shape or style of the cut. The goal is to remove damage while maintaining the existing look. A haircut changes the shape, length or style. If you ask for a trim, your stylist knows to preserve the structure and simply refresh the ends.

How often should you trim?

This depends on your hair length, texture and how much heat or chemical processing it goes through. As a general guide:

Trim frequency by hair length
Very short or cropped hair. Every two to four weeks to maintain the shape and prevent the style from looking grown out.
Mid-length hair. Every six weeks keeps the ends healthy and the shape intact.
Long hair. Every six to eight weeks. The longer the hair, the further damage can travel before it becomes visible, so regular trimming protects the length you are trying to grow.

What regular trims actually do

The real benefits
Removes split ends before they spread. Once a hair splits at the end, it will continue to split upward if left untrimmed. Removing split ends at the point they appear stops the damage travelling further and protects the overall length.
Hair looks and feels healthier. Damaged ends make the whole length look dull and uneven. Removing them immediately improves texture, shine and how the hair moves.
Styling becomes easier. Damaged hair is uneven in texture and resists styling. Once the damaged sections are removed, heat styling, blowdrying and product application all work more evenly and efficiently.
Hair appears thicker and fuller. Removing straggly, uneven ends gives the hair a blunter, more consistent finish that reads as thicker from root to tip.
Frizz is reduced. Split ends and breakage are the primary causes of frizz. Keeping on top of trims keeps frizz controlled without needing heavy products to mask it.
Hair is easier to detangle. Damaged ends knot more easily and are harder to brush through. Healthy, trimmed ends detangle far more quickly and with less breakage during brushing.
The growth myth
Trimming does not make hair grow faster. Hair grows from the root, not the ends. What trimming does is remove breakage so that the length you are growing is retained rather than snapping off at the ends before you can see it.

Signs it is time for a trim

You do not have to wait for a scheduled appointment if the signs are there. These are the clearest indicators that your hair needs a trim sooner rather than later.

What to look for
Visible split ends. The most obvious sign. If you can see the hair shaft splitting at the end, the damage is already there and will travel up if not removed.
Ends appearing lighter than the rest of your hair. This is a sign of wear and tear from heat and styling. The cuticle has been damaged and the ends have become porous.
Increased frizz and loss of definition. When the ends break down, the hair loses its shape and starts to look and behave differently at the lengths.
Styling does not hold. If blowdries, curls or straightening are not lasting as long as they used to, damaged ends are usually the cause.
Hair feels rough or tangles constantly. The cuticle is open and catching on itself. A trim removes the worst of it and makes the hair feel smooth again.
