Did you know that, when it comes to hair dye choices, blonde is the number 1 choice in Britain?
It’s actually a platinum, icy blonde that’s the most favoured – and totally on-trend right now! But, as we all know, bleached blonde hair is notoriously difficult to achieve.
Hair bleach will put your tresses to the test and if you don’t look after them, they can come out the other side looking a little worse for wear. Don’t panic though, most mistakes and mishaps when it comes to lightening your hair come from doing it at home – this is something we recommend leaving to the professionals! Professionals know what they’re doing when bleaching your hair, and help you keep it in good condition, making sure it doesn’t fall out.
Find out more with our expert bleached hair colouring guide.
What Actually is Hair Bleach?
Okay, the first thing to learn about bleaching your hair is what exactly this process is. Whilst we love a blonde bombshell, the method of getting there isn’t very kind! By understanding the process that you’re about to do, you can learn more about how to look after your hair once its bleached to keep it strong and healthy.
Bleach is actually a chemical treatment that removes your hair of its colour by opening up the cuticle. The bleach reacts with the melanin in the hair, removing the colour through an irreversible chemical reaction. The bleach oxidizes the melanin molecule. The melanin is still present, but the oxidized molecule is colourless. When that natural colour is gone, you’ll be left with your undercoat – darker bases have red, medium bases have orange and lighter bases have yellow pigment. Pre lightener will lift the pigment out to reveal the undercoat. Toners are used to neutralise the warmth. Toners will fade and the yellow will come back through. If the hair was been lifted to white you have over lightened and weakened the internal structure of the hair.
A lot of people leave bleach in for long periods of time in hopes of getting lighter hair and reducing the chances of orange or brassy tones. This definitely isn’t a good idea. Whilst the bleach will have longer to rid your hair of colour it’ll also do more damage, and if you leave it in too long you could be left with hair that’s in need of some serious TLC! Over processing your hair can result in it literally melting off (that’s a technical term, we promise!) with it burning off at the root and disintegrating at the ends – this is another reason why you should always go professional when it comes to hair lightening treatments!
Will Your Hair Fall Out If You Bleach It?
Whilst no one can say your hair won’t fall out if you bleach it, it’s not very likely. Bleached hair will only fall out if it’s been overprocessed to the max or the bleach is left on for far too long, which shouldn’t happen with a trained professional.
What’s more likely to happen is breakage. A lot of people get this confused with their hair falling out, but it’s actually very different. Hair breakage is when the strand of hair snaps off at some point along the shaft.
Breakage can be quite widespread if your hair isn’t properly bleached and looked after. It can leave you with a more choppy do than you might have anticipated and some haphazard layers, but it is avoidable! As long as you do your research in to post treatment hair care and follow your hair care professionals advice before diving into bleaching you should be able to keep it healthy and avoid breakage. Your hairdresser will know and be able to tell you when your hair isn’t in a good condition for potentially damaging treatment, for example if it’s particularly porous.
Porous hair is a reflection of damage to the cuticle (outside structure) it’s dry and needs moisture – this is generally caused by heat. Sensitised hair is damage to the internal structure, it changes the elasticity in the hair causing it to become brittle and snapping or stretchy like chewing gum. While some products can help restrengthen your hair, bleach can cause irreversible damage which will just need to be cut off. This isn’t just limited to the ends of your hair.
Can You Go from Black to Blonde Hair?
Is bleaching your hair bad if you go from black to blonde in one sitting? It definitely could be. Whilst professional hair bleaching shouldn’t damage hair, going from black or dark brown to blonde in one sitting could. Not only this, it’s near enough impossible!
If you ask your hairdresser to do this, they’ll probably advise you do it in stages. When it comes to how many times can you bleach your hair in one session the answer is always one! It’s pretty much impossible to get from black to white, blonde safely with one bleaching session.
White and platinum blondes are really popular, but often difficult to achieve on darker bases, not only this they are also really difficult to maintain. If you’re after those popular platinum and white shades, make sure you consult with your hairdresser to discuss how light your base shade will allow you to go, and are aware of the maintenance that will be required to keep it looking fabulous!
Your first session will bleach the hair safely, making it lighter but probably not getting to the light/ clean/ bright blonde you’re after. Your stylist will use toner to help improve the initial colour and reduce orange and brassy tones. You should then leave a minimum of two weeks for your hair to recover. Your stylist can then check its condition and let you know whether or not they can bleach again. If not, they’ll leave your hair for a little longer before going lighter again.
This can be a little bit frustrating, but it’s so worth it! When we treat hair maintaining the condition of your hair is our top priority, and we don’t carry out treatments that could cause long-term damage. You’d rather have healthy, glossy blonde locks for the long-term than dry, frizzy hair covered in split ends and breakage, right?
Can You Bleach Your Hair at Home?
If you’re thinking of bleaching your hair, a lot of people (including us) would advise you not to. There are so many things that can go wrong when bleaching your hair at home that it’s really not worth it! This is a chemical process, and you need to take that seriously.
It’s worth keeping in mind that home bleach is more dangerous than any other home colour because it’s got stronger ingredients for maximum lift. If applied incorrectly this can cause significant damage. Home bleach will also leave you with a warmer blonde as the undercoat is revealed. With a professional’s knowledge we can lift to the correct level and tone to neutralise.
A professional hair stylist is going to be able to apply the bleach properly, monitor it on your hair, and keep any damage to a minimum. They’ll also be able to help you keep your healthy by checking it every time you see them and letting you know what it needs more or less of (mainly in terms of protein and moisture). There’s no way around it; bleached hair done in a salon always looks and feels better than hair that’s bleached at home.
When it comes to home colouring our advice is clear… Stay away! Professionals mix bespoke formulas taking into account your natural hair colour, previous colour history, hair condition etc. Application process & timings vary depending on starting point and desired shade. The products available for home colouring are much stronger because it’s a one box fits all for maximum lift. This risks over processing your hair.
Maintenance for Bleached Hair
Once you’ve taken the plunge and your hair is now a beautiful blonde, it’s time for the maintenance to begin! Your hair is going to be more fragile than you’re used to after bleaching, and there are things you should do to make sure it doesn’t become unmanageable.
The first is to look at the products you’re using. Opt for a nourishing shampoo and conditioner designed for chemically treated hair. Silver shampoo is notoriously popular for counteracting this and keeping brassiness at bay.
You’re also going to have to add protein into your hair’s diet. Bleaching your hair reduces the natural protein in it and to keep it strong and help it rebuild, some extra treatments are going to be essential. You can opt for protein masks or daily leave-in serums to give your hair the boost it needs.
Alongside what you put onto your hair; you also need to be careful with how you treat it. Hair is always more fragile when wet, so avoid brushing it after a shower or putting it up, instead gently patting it dry with a towel and leaving it down. Use heat as little as possible to help prevent more damage and always use a heat-protector if you do!
There’s no doubt that your hair is going to be in a more fragile state after you’ve bleached it, but that doesn’t have to lead to breakage and split ends. As long as you know how to properly maintain it, you should be able to keep it looking glossy and healthy. Remember, if you’re ever struggling one of our hair stylists will always be happy to take a look at the condition of your hair and give you tips to nurse it back to life.

Having had amazing Guest feedback, we’ve decided to give a special offer on NEW Keratin Hair Smoothing treatments in Clifton at NOCO Hair.
Winter haircare can be difficult, especially given the additional pressure we put hair under: cold and windy weather, indoor heating, and lots of hard rain.
December, January and February are particularly important ties of the year to ensure that hair is hydrated, de-frizzed, in pH balance, and well nourished.
Our Keratin Treatment (also called a Brazilian Blow-dry) offers an incredible level of hair smoothing, de-frizzing, and extra shine, which lasts up to 12 weeks. It also repairs hair, adding strength and elasticity.
We use hair treatment products from a superb Brand called 72 Hair, which is also a Vegan-friendly range and is perfect for all hair types, as well as being formulated from plant extracts, organic amino acids and pure keratin.
The new pHrizzy-o-therapy Keratin Hair Smoothing treatment at NOCO Hair is a keratin complex treatment, which utilises two formulas.
The classic treatment is a cream formula which is blow-dried into the hair, whilst pHrizzy-o-therapy is a gel consistency formula that’s much lighter on the hair. Both hair smoothing treatments from 72 Hair give amazing results.
The pHrizzy-o-therapy process is simply, wash hair, treat, develop, rinse thoroughly, blow-dry then straighten.

As we head into the New Year many of our guests have been asking about Clifton hair trends for 2021 from our Whiteladies Road salon.
And as an award-winning Bristol hair salon, we’ve always got an eye on what’s hot in terms of predictions for hair trends and hair colours.
Overall, the hair trend to watch out for in January will be bigger is better. We’re seeing a move towards brushed out, bouncy curls. There will be a growing emphasis on natural texture and free movement in 2021 hairstyling.
The main hair trends to watch out for in 2021 will be:
1. Short & Soft
Guests will be going for cropped styles, with longer and softer layers. There will be grown-out Pixie haircuts, utilising razor techniques at our Clifton salon for a feathered feel and a stylish finish.
2. Textured Midi-Cut
This collarbone-length cut delivers long, soft, textured layers, and is finished with a dishevelled lazy wave. A splash of sea salt spray gives a gorgeous lived-in look, and will be a big hit in January and February. Ask in-salon.
In terms of the hottest hair colours for 2021, the predictions from our Whiteladies Road hair colourists includes the following:
3. Honey Blonde
This hair colour trades Wintery ice whites and silvers for softer shades as we head into 2021, and by adding warmer hues it gears up for Spring. Plus, if you’re missing the sunshine (let’s face it, we all are!) it’s easy to utilise a Honey Blonde to brighten up the complexion by changing hair tone.
4. Bronde
Many of our guests are asking about ‘New Year, New Me’ and a Blonde hair colour is the perfect answer to New Year hype. It’s versatile, and just right when it comes to toning down bright blondes, or to brighten up brunettes. A Bronde hair colour is the perfect balance of depth and tone to start 2021.

It’s been an incredible year, and we wanted to do a 2020 Round-up from the team at Clifton salon NOCO Hair, to highlight some of the positives, despite the testing impact from Covid-19 during the course of the last 11 months.
The first thing we’d like to celebrate is the fact our award-winning Clifton salon has survived two national lockdowns, as well as celebrating our second birthday.
During the first lockdown, we launched a hugely-popular series of How To online video tutorials, giving guests free access to hairstyling and hair care.
Check out the full series of our innovative, useful and free How To videos here.
We also introduced virtual hair consultations, as well as offering online-based retail sales. Both of these web-based initiatives are still proving popular now.
Despite the global pandemic, here at NOCO Hair we’ve extended our gorgeous salon in Clifton and recruited four new team members during 2020.
You can find out more about the award-winning NOCO Hair team here.
Some of the 250 independent Guest reviews posted on Google this year have included the following incredible comments about the NOCO Hair experience:
“Had a wash, cut and blow dry today. Mia was brilliant. She really listened to what it was I wanted. It was the first time that I did not need to restyle it once I got home. I felt like a different person when I walked out! Thanks Mia. I also felt really safe in the salon, and think the measurements they have in place to try and protect everyone from Covid are fantastic. Great job, team.”
“Great experience in every aspect. I was welcomed at Reception, Covid-safe measures were excellent (I particularly appreciated the use of a sink for hand-washing instead of using gel), and I felt safe and in good hands. The chair and head massage were amazing. Marika gave me a great haircut, and listened to what I asked for, was professional, and super-friendly. I’m very happy with the result and will definitely be back!”
“Oh my goodness – Corey has exceeded all expectations this time! New cut and colour, feeling amazing, and spent all day yesterday being told how fantastic my hair looks. It’s great to see how much progress the Apprentices are making. Jade has grown in confidence so much, and that only comes from great teachers! Well done team NOCO, keep doing what you do best.”
This year has been a trying time for all Bristol charities, and here at NOCO Hair we wanted to increase our role and positive part in the community.
With that in mind, we gave 100 haircuts for free to regional charitable bodies, as well as holding a fund-raising event for cancer charity Penny Brohn, with all proceeds going directly to the charity.
To find out more about our other charity work, please visit here.
We also styled hair for a prominent catwalk event, raising funds and awareness for mental health support organisation OTR Bristol.
In-salon, we dedicated time and energy during 2020 to create a new Blow-Dry menu and educate the team, as well as providing balayage training to cover the very latest trends and techniques for our rota of talented Clifton stylists.
One of our fabulous stylists Marika Angelotti also styled the hair for a front cover shoot featured on the cover of popular Bristol Magazine.
Our Clifton hair salon also reached the finals for categories of Salon of the Year and Independent Salon Business Newcomer in the British Hairdressing Awards 2020, one of the most prestigious hair and beauty events in the UK.

The Clifton hair care experts at NOCO Hair on Whiteladies Road are delighted to unveil treatments for dry hair in lockdown.
This is particularly important during lockdown, as dry hair and irritated scalps can be agitated by more time indoors with heating on in Autumn and Winter.
Dry hair is an increasing issue for many guests, as the second lockdown has impacted our lives across the city, meaning more time inside can negatively impact the integrity and overall health of the hair and scalp areas.
We’re delighted to be able to offer superb treatments for dry hair, with the Hydrate My Hair range from Eleven, available at our Clifton hair salon.
Firstly, we recommend using a nourishing shampoo from this range that replenishes moisture. Containing hydrolysed wheat protein to hydrate and strengthen hair, it’s suitable for normal to dry hair, and is easy to apply. Simply apply to wet hair, lather and rinse, then repeat as required.
The next step in an effective treatment for dry hair problems in lockdown is to use an ultra-nourishing conditioner from the Hydrate My Hair range. This will further help to replenish moisture.
The conditioner is packed with avocado oil and hydrolysed wheat protein, to moisturise and strengthen hair and can be used on all hair types. Apply to freshly-washed hair, leave in for three minutes, then rinse.
To finish, we advise trying a lightweight detangler spray with pear extract from the Hydrate My Hair range to tame unruly hair. This is suitable for all hair types, and simply spray generously on damp hair from roots to ends, then comb through leaving the treated hair smooth, rehydrated and tangle-free.
This product also helps to restore the scalp’s natural PH balance, and creates a healthier environment for hair to grow during the colder months. Plus, it smells of pear and the entire hair care team at NOCO Hair absolutely love it.
We also recently wrote a News post on how to maintain clean and shiny hair during lockdown – to find out more about our top tips, please visit here.
Our Clifton hair salon is temporarily closed due to the second Covid-19 lockdown, in line with Government guidelines, but we do have a waiting list in place for when NOCO Hair re-opens on Wednesday 02nd December.
To sign up to our waiting list, and ensure you get full and direct access to our hair care experts as well as booking in your December Clifton hair services from our award-winning team, please visit here to find out more.

The NOCO Hair management team are really excited to be able to offer our lovely guests discounts when you refer a friend to Clifton’s best hair salon!
The new Refer a Friend scheme launched in-salon gives existing guests the chance to enjoy deals and discounts when friends and family are referred.
And with Christmas on the way, now is the perfect time to recommend our Clifton hairdressers to your loved ones and best friends, so you can all enjoy our gorgeous hairdressing, hair care, and pampering in-salon.
The new NOCO Hair Refer A Friend scheme couldn’t be simpler – if you refer a friend to us, get them to quote your name and your unique number on the back of your Treat Card. They will then get £15 off their first cut or colour with us, and you’ll also get £15 your next visit to our award-winning Clifton hair salon.
When your referred friend books an appointment, you’ll be sent a text message to thank you. Your friend must have used their discount, however, before you can utilise yours.
Before your visit to our Clifton salon, please ask one of our reception team who will confirm that your friend has visited by checking their name against the text message you’ve received from us.
Each guest must have a Treat Card registered in their name to be able to refer a friend and enjoy these discounts as we head towards Christmas.
The new Refer A Friend scheme is also only available to guests who have been to see us for various hairdressing services before, and not new guests.
Each guest can refer up to five new people before you can use your discount: therefore, when you have referred five people (at £15 each time), you will received £75 off your next cut or colour.
The NOCO Hair Refer A Friend scheme cannot be used in conjunction with any other offers running in-salon, although if the Refer A Friend offer is better value than any other promotion you’re entitled to, please use it to your benefit.
If you have lost your NOCO Treat Card, we can give you another one. These key fobs are perfect to keep handy on your bunch of keys, so that you can mention it to someone when they comment on how amazing your hair looks!
All guests have a 12-month period to utilise their Refer A Friend discount from the date they receive a text message from us highlighting the offer is live.
Finally, the new Refer A Friend discount is only applicable for a reduction on the cost of a haircut or hair colouring appointment with our Clifton hairdressers. It cannot be used to purchase any hair products in-salon.

Our Clifton hairdressers at NOCO Hair have recently unveiled a stunning French Bob, one of our favourite seasonal haircuts in Bristol for Autumn.
As you can see from the in-salon example taken last week at our Whiteladies Road salon, the guest has been given an absolutely gorgeous Autumn hairstyle.
We recently wrote about the top Autumn hair trends in Clifton for 2020, and one of the hairstyles featured – find out more here.
A French Bob is essentially a Classic Bob with a modern twist. The difference between a French Bob and a Classic Bob at our award-winning Clifton salon is texture. A French Bob delivers a dishevelled texture with a softer feel.
A French Bob is often also styled by enhancing the wave with natural movement and a heated tong, and suits a variety of hair colours. It’s a gorgeous look which can be cheek chiselling, jaw skimming or shoulder swooping and the combination of a blunt edge with movement gives a superb finish, which many of our guests are now requesting as an Autumn haircut.
A French Bob will never go out of fashion, and our Clifton hairdressers deliver the look using primary shapes (square, circle, triangle) to enhance the natural features of each guest. By elongating the neck, a French Bob hairstyle can also take years off the overall guest, as well as making the face look slimmer.
Although a French Bob loses its initial shape after about eight weeks, it is easy to manage and works with curly or straight hair. It can be worn with or without a fringe, and is a gorgeous Autumn hairstyle for any hair colour.
We would advise guests with highlights going low down their back to avoid a French Bob hairstyle in Bristol, as it can look spotty and doesn’t work well.
A French Bob haircut at our Clifton hair salon costs between £55 and £95 depending on the stylist level providing the look, and takes around an hour in the chair.
At NOCO Hair, we also exclusively utilise a wrap-drying technique with guests opting for a French Bob. This adds extra shine, and wrap-drying keeps the hairdryer above the head, and with the use of a flat Denman brush, drying the roots for maximum shine. When the roots are dry, we finish off the ends.
We also recommend that guests utilise Oi shampoo and conditioner from our in-salon Davines range. We also recommend Oi Milk which contains Roucou Oil, an amazing hair conditioning product that gives a shine better than diamonds!
So, if you’re thinking about a low-maintenance, high-impact Autumn hairstyle in Bristol why not up-style to an amazing French Bob before Christmas.
To book in with our Clifton hairdressers for a stunning French Bob haircut in Bristol for yourself, please book online here.

The seasons are changing and our team of Bristol stylists have been seeing guests asking what are the Autumn 2020 hair trends in Clifton going to be.
Having reviewed the top hairstyles, popular hair colours, and favourite creative cuts for Autumn at our Clifton hair salon, we think the most on-trend hair colours in Bristol will be the following combinations:
- Warm, rich glossy hair
- Chocolate browns with caramel/toffee highlights
- Ribbons of depth & warmer tones for Autumnal glow
- Honey and soft apricot tones to warm up blondes
- Some of our favourite hair colouring services for Autumn on Whiteladies Road will include the following:
Champagne Blonde
This classy, elegant colour is tasteful, super-wearable and sophisticated. It gives a combination of soft gold and ash tones to create a neutral colour with a stunning shine. It’s the perfect balance of warm and cool tones, and is suitable for all skin types. We use a bespoke formula to gloss the hair too.
New Natural
This Autumnal hair colour gives a lived-in feel with natural texture. This is our take on a seasonal balayage for Autumn, which gives added depth and richness as we head into the colder months. It’s almost a reverse balayage, whereby our Clifton hair colourists add an acidic colour range to the root area and blend down to melt away old highlights without changing the natural pigment. This gives the softest finish with no regrowth line and dazzling shine.
Ribbons of Richness
Multi-dimensional Autumn hair colour using complimentary tones. We take diagonal sliced panels of colour through the ends to add depth and dimension to hair. This splash of colour creates an optical illusion, whilst making hair look thicker and fuller. Our Clifton hair colouring team can blend in deep, burnt coppers and rich mahogany tones for brunettes or warm honey and apricot.
Moving onto the top haircuts for Autumn from our Clifton hairdressers, and we think the best creative cuts from our award-winning team will include:
French Bob
A classy, chic and elegant seasonal haircut, the French Bob is a classic Bob with a modern twist.
Cheek chiselling, jaw skimming or shoulder-swooping, this Autumn haircut can be adapted to suit any face shape and hair texture. The combination of a blunt edge with internal movement gives an incredible finish for our guests.
Modern Mullet
This is a textured, toned seasonal haircut from our Whiteladies Road hairdressers, and delivers volume, movement, face framing and soft tapered edges.
It’s an infinitely wearable Autumn haircut, and the rise in popularity of fringes is proven in this look. Tapered edges give a softer feel, with a 70s look, soft texture and a smart sexy choppy look for guests.
Finally, our Clifton hairstyling team are predicting that styling for Autumn 2020 in Bristol will centre upon selected hair accessories such as ribbons, scrunchies and head bands.
Low ponytails will be popular, with a 70s care-free mix of waves and undone texture proving to be a big hit in the run-up to Christmas. High gloss lux finish will be in demand, with lots of shine to finish guests’ hairstyling this Autumn.
To experience our Autumn hair trends in Clifton for yourself, please book online here.

Clifton hairdresser and co-founder of award-winning Whiteladies Road salon NOCO Hair Corey was asked to highlight the difference between hair lightening and hair colouring this week by a guest, so we thought it would be useful to write a News post on this topic as well.
Hair lightening and hair colouring are essentially highlights and lowlights, with highlights being lighter than a guest’s base hair colour, with lowlights being darker than a guest’s base colour.
Both hair lightening and hair colouring services at our Clifton salon are a great way to add movement and dimension to hair.
Highlights will brighten hair and add the illusion of volume, whilst lowlights create depth and boost contrast in hair.
Some of the favourite hair lightening techniques utilised by our Whiteladies Road hair colourists include:
- Balayage Highlights: this is a traditional woven highlight, paired with the balayage technique of surface painting and mixing up to the root, for a seamless blend and a soft grow-out.
- Freehand Highlights: no foil technique is used here, to give a super natural result. The hair is woven, painted, and left to develop in the open air. This hair lightening technique is perfect for creating a soft, sun-kissed look.
- Babylights & Strandlights: Babylights are finer than traditional highlights, and used at our Clifton hair salon for a more natural non-striped result and a softer re-growth. Strandlights are the finest of highlights, picking out strands of hair, which create a glistening of colour. This is a great technique for topping up a balayage, or brightening up the top part of the hair where the sun will catch it, giving a natural result and a soft re-growth.
The favourite hair colouring techniques used at NOCO Hair include:
- Root touch-up and all-over colour: this is perfect for when a permanent colour is needed for complete grey coverage, or to lighten the base hair colour by up to three levels. It’s important to note that tint does not lift tint if the hair has been previously coloured, and a hair lightening technique would then be needed to lighten it.
- Quasi-permanent colour is used to stay on the same base and to add tone, or to darken the natural hair colour. It can also be used to cover up to 70% of white hair for a guest if required.
- Colour Melt and Colour & Foils: this is the combination of hair colouring and hair lightening, where a base colour is applied to the roots with either lighter pieces painted through the ends, or foiled technique used at the roots.
- Toning & Glossing: a hair toner will and or change the tone in hair, whilst lightening services will reveal the undercoat of the hair. A hair toner will also close down the cuticle and add shine.
At NOCO Hair, we also have a bespoke ‘Signature Soft Blend’ technique which ensures the most seamless hair colour from root to tip, and a super-soft grow out. We use a special toning technique for this, and is perfect if a guest wants to be really blonde but doesn’t want high maintenance for the look.
In terms of timings and costs for our hair lightening and hair colouring services in Clifton, the following guidelines are a useful starting point:
- Root Touch-up: every 4-6 weeks, starting from £45 with 30-minute application and covers grey hair.
- All-over Colour: every 6-8 weeks, starting from £65, with 45-minute application.
- Highlights: every 6-8 week, starting from £75, with 45-minute application and camouflages grey hair.
